We take it for granted, but memory is fundamental to everything
you do. As soon as you start losing your memory your whole life goes
into meltdown. When my mother started having trouble with her memory it
was difficult because she was only in her 50s. At the time we just
thought she was being eccentric. She had always been funny, always
saying the wrong thing at the wrong time and we would think 'I can't
believe she said that!' But this was an exaggerated form. She started
crying a lot.

It was alleged on Wednesday morning
by the London Metro newspaper that I told an audience of young people in
a debate at Channel 4's offices that they should busk to raise money to
use public transport, leave school at 16 and work for less than the
minimum wage. No direct quotations can be found attributing these
remarks to me. That is because I said none of these things.
Muhammad Ali came with a legend
surrounding him. I interviewed him four times and was fortunate to map
out the rise and fall of this fascinating man. He was an extraordinary
man, and a great athlete, with charisma; nobody I have ever met had that
in such abundance as he.
If we know one thing, we know wars
are dreadful, the worst that can happen to mankind. So how can we deal
with the awkward fact that, in the great sweep of human history, wars
have surprisingly often produced the breakthroughs, in ideas as well as
technologies, the rest of us then come to depend on?
Life is about memories. I've got a
career where I've got loads of memories. But even just an ordinary man
in the street, like my brother David, he's got his memories as well. And
not to be able to think about them, remember them, that must be awful.
That must be terrible.
So in which direction does Page Three
nudge us? Let me introduce the uninitiated to a little box called 'News
in Briefs'. This little box purports to be the thoughts of the girl
posing that day; they are presented in erudite fashion, and contain an
esoteric quotation.
Sometimes people say sorry when they
don't mean it. And surprise, surprise, people don't believe a word. So
what makes an apology real? Here are some tests...
Over a decade ago, 21 September was
chosen for this honorable role but it's still one of the best kept
secrets of the United Nations. On Friday at UN Headquarters in NY, a boy
will ring a bell, a girl will sing Imagine and at noon, guests will
experience one minute of silence.

Thursday's report from Ofsted
revealing that the pupil premium is not consistently being used
effectively is deeply concerning. It is particularly worrying since if
targeted correctly, the funding has real potential to help to transform
disadvantaged pupils' educational experience. The Government Must Ensure the Pupil Premium Is Being Used to Transform Disadvantaged Pupils' Educational Experience
It was hardly a surprise when a Tory
housing minister in a Tory-led government announced that he was to
reanimate the corpse of right to buy. Once again, reassurances have
been given that each home sold will be replaced. Yet the devil is as
always in the detail.
Evelyn Lauder was a true inspiration;
she had personal experience of breast cancer and was determined to
address a crucial lack of funding in breast cancer research at the time.
She led the pink power movement that lit up iconic buildings in pink
across the world and got people everywhere taking about breast cancer.
We thought we'd seen banking at its
lowest point when the public were forced to bail out the banks four
years ago, but since then we've seen the libor rate-rigging scandal and
continued mis-selling. All the while the bankers who presided over
corruption continue to enjoy hugely inflated pay and bonuses.
I've always been a firm believer in
the value of providing children with the opportunity to better
themselves. It is an issue that is very close to my heart, having
experienced a troubled childhood myself.
To me, the real crux of the food
revival hasn't been that more people own a kitchen blowtorch or a bottle
of truffle oil than before, but that people are focussing on their own
tastes much closely... My real hope is that with a few pointers, I can
get people doing the same with their drinks
Painkillers can't be considered as a
cure for headaches. They block the pain receptors that are giving the
brain the message that there is a problem. Painkillers are not
addressing the problem of where the headache is really coming from.
Winter dressing is fun. I like to think of it as an exercise in wearing all your favourite clothes at once, a thought that is far too exciting
There's been an awful lot written
about women's bodies recently. What with the endless articles devoted to
Kate's boobs, the revelation that the 'average' woman spends 17 years
of her life on a diet, not to mention the ongoing political battle about
who gets to decide when she keeps or doesn't keep her unborn child. All
in all, that's a lot of column inches devoted to fatness, thinness and
everything in-between. No wonder we're all so f*cked up about our
figures.
Police officers do not want to carry
guns, but many know they need to be to armed in order to carry out their
duties in 21st century Britain. I am not passionate about arming the
police, but sadly I know it has long been a necessity.
On 5 September an old friend of mine,
Saad Al-Hilli, along with his wife and mother-in-law were shot dead
near the village of Chevaline in the French Alps. The incident is
complex so it's ripe for armchair detectives to investigate from the
comfort of their homes.
They were touted as the solution to
climate change but they have ended up making it worse, depriving
millions of people of food, land and water - and UK consumers are paying
the price at the pump. Replacing fossil fuels with biofuels has
backfired and only big business is benefitting.
Freezing working-age benefits would
almost certainly weaken the living standards of low-income families,
including the millions of working families who rely on tax credits to
top up their earnings. The Coalition's reliance on benefit freezes to
curb rising welfare spending also suggests they are running out of ideas
on welfare reform.
National Farmers' Union and the
majority of farmers - but not all - may believe that badger culls will
do the trick, and a lot of politicians want to keep the farmers onside.
And it will probably pay electoral dividends for a while. But longer
term this 'solution' is could even make things worse...
